The halls of Mishpacha Children’s Home in Odessa, Ukraine, rang with laughter and excitement as students reunited with friends and teachers for the “First Bell” celebration that marked the beginning of a new school year. The warmth of the celebration was palpable, with loving educators eager to welcome their students back and begin another year of learning and growth.
The ceremony began with a special blessing from Chief Rabbi of Odessa and Southern Ukraine, Rabbi Abraham Wolf, who wished the students and their families great success and prayed for a peaceful, carefree year ahead. His words carried particular weight in these times, offering comfort and encouragement to the children who call Mishpacha their family.
Adding to the spiritual significance of the day—the start of the Jewish month of Elul—Rabbi Schneur Wigler blew the shofar for everyone present. The act served as a meaningful reminder of the approaching holiday of Rosh Hashanah, connecting the children to their rich cultural heritage.
Director Naum Yosipovich Melmud then addressed the gathered students, offering his heartfelt wishes for success in their studies and blessing them with an exciting year. His words reflected the dedication and care that the staff at Mishpacha Children’s Home provides to each child.
One of the day’s highlights came when each student was gifted a beautiful new school backpack, ensuring they would start the academic year properly equipped with the supplies they need. The sight of children clutching their new backpacks, beaming with pride and gratitude, embodied the spirit of new beginnings and fresh possibilities.
The celebration featured a charming performance by the students themselves, based on a midrash about the letters of the Torah. In their presentation, each letter asked that the Torah begin with them, ultimately teaching the audience about the vital importance of modesty and humility.
As tradition dictates, the ceremony concluded with the ringing of the first bell, officially marking the start of the new school year. The sound symbolized not just the beginning of classes, but the continuation of dreams, the pursuit of knowledge, and the promise of brighter tomorrows for these resilient children.
Here’s to a successful year ahead for all the students at Mishpacha Children’s Home—may their studies be fruitful, their friendships deep, and their futures bright.
